Northeast Mexico
A tri-state introduction to tropical Mexico
This tour covers a number of interesting habitats and offers the possibility to see more than 20 Mexican endemic birds and a number of tropical species at their northern limit.
The tour starts and ends in Monterrey Nuevo Leon and first heads west to the dry desert areas in search of the highly endangered Worthen's Sparrow. From there we head back east over the mountains looking for Maroon-fronted Parrots, Colima Warblers, Gray-collared Becards and Rufous-capped Brushfinch. The second day we head out to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico for some shorebirds and waders and then night birding for Tawny-collared Nightjar. The following day we will drive to the small town of Gomez Farias where we will be based for the rest of the tour. The birding in the area is fantastic with many regional endemics possible. Altamira Yellowthroat, Tamaulipas Pygmy Owl, Crimson-collared Grosbeak, Bumblebee Hummingbird, Blue-capped Motmot and more! There are also excellent opportunities for finding the beautiful Ornate Hawk-Eagle, Singing Quail, Hooded Grosbeak and Sungrebe! While in Gomez Farias we will make an overnight trip into the highlands to Rancho del Cielo, where we will find a completely different array of birds. The last day is a drive back to Monterrey with some birding along the way.
